The Fascinating Diversityof the "Cathar Country"
In southern France, in the dynamic region of Occitanie, the Aude department is an area of contrasts. Nestled between the majestic foothills of the Pyrenees in the south, the rugged Corbières mountains and the sun-drenched Mediterranean coast in the east, this region embodies everything that makes southern France so fascinating: a Mediterranean microclimate, pristine natural landscapes, a thousand-year history and extraordinary quality of life. Far beyond the borders of France, Aude is known as the historical heart of "Cathar country" and attracts discerning independent travelers, digital nomads and forward-thinking real estate investors alike
The mission of"The Aude, the southern soul"

Connect Local Actors through Community Networks

1. Monumental HeritageUNESCO Sites & Historical Treasures
The density of historically significant cultural monuments in Aude is exceptional.
The Citadel of Carcassonne
As Europe's most completely preserved medieval fortified city, the Cité is the undisputed cultural landmark of the region. With its monumental double walls, 52 towers and the Château Comtal (Count's Castle), it transports visitors directly back to the Middle Ages. It ranks among the most visited historical monuments in all of France and ensures a year-round stream of international visitors to the region.
# The Canal du Midi
This engineering masterpiece of the 17th century, designed by Pierre-Paul Riquet, has been celebrated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for over 30 years. The canal connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean. It serves as the epicenter of modern "slow tourism" — houseboat trips, cycling tours along the towpaths and romantic walks.
2. Ocean& untouched nature
The geographic diversity of the Aude department makes it possible to travel from the foothills of the Pyrenees to the fine sandy beaches of the Mediterranean in a short driving time.
Away from mass tourism, Aude offers approximately 50 kilometres of coastline with six historically grown fishing and coastal villages.
World-famous for its stilt houses built on wooden stakes, the historic salt gardens (Salins de Gruissan) and its circular village center around the Tour Barberousse
International mecca for windsurfers and kitesurfers as well as a renowned center for oyster farming.
Nature Parks& Hiking Trails
The Regional Nature Park "Narbonnaise en Méditerranée" encompasses unique lagoon landscapes, coastal areas and the Clape Massif — a paradise for biodiversity. The renovated "Sentier Cathare" (GR 367) leads to the legendary Cathar castles of "Peyrepertuse", "Quéribus" and "Puilaurens" — they perch like eagles' nests on rocky spurs with panoramic views stretching to the Pyrenees.
3. Culture, Culinary Arts& "Savoir-Vivre"
Artists' & Book Villages
The official village of books and arts — numerous antiquarian bookstores, bookbinderies and galleries.
One of the most beautiful villages in France — cobblestone streets, historic bridge, monumental Sainte-Marie Abbey.
